Lady Gaga dominated the MTV Europe Music Awards Sunday night, triumphing in the best female, best song ("Born This Way"), best video and best fan categories.

The singer performed "Marry The Night" in a sculpted satellite-theme costume on top of a giant moon sculpture, wowing the packed house at Belfast’s Odyssey Arena.

"Thank you for believing in my vision; the success of Born This Way has changed my life," she told the crowd.

Justin Bieber shrugged off comments about his private life to pick up two awards, best male and best pop. The singer performed "Under The Mistletoe" as an opener in front of an audience of more than 8,000 and then segued into "Never Say Never." The baby-faced singer currently fighting off a paternity suit didn't share a stage with girlfriend Selena Gomez, who – at 19 – was the youngest host ever of the awards show.

Gomez was also the first host to combine online and social media elements of the show in addition to the TV performance.

Bruno Mars won the best push and best new categories while Thirty Seconds To Mars were named best alternative performers.

Katy Perry was named best live act and Linkin Park were named best rock act.

Korean Band BigBang won the best worldwide category, beating off competition from such musical luminaries as Adele.

This year’s MTV Europe Music Awards took over the city of Belfast Sunday night, with an outdoor performance from hometown boys Snow Patrol at the City Hall that shut down the traffic in the centre of town and attracted an audience of over 15,000 fans. Only a few blocks away the Red Hot Chilli Peppers joined the party, wowing MTV competition winners with an intimate 1,000-capacity gig at Ulster Hall, a classical music venue complete with organ as backdrop for the rock band's high-octane set.

Coldplay opened the performances at the Odyssey with a massively amped up performance of "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" and Jessie J exploded out of a giant golden bank safe during Bruno Mars’ performance of "Marry You."

But it was left to British rock legend Queen – who have been together longer than the ages of host Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber combined – to bring the house down with a medley of hits spanning their career.

Recipients of the Global Icon gong and fronted by American Idol finalist Adam Lambert, Brian May and Roger Taylor had the Odyssey audience on its feet with hits including "The Show Must Go On," "We Will Rock You" and "We Are The Champions."
