Paul D’Amour is better know for his work with the progressive rock band Tool having been the bands bass player and song writer for some time. While D’Amour has been experimenting with his music for some time I think Feersum Ennjin is probably one of the most experimental. The bands self titled debut album has a good mix of style thrown into the pot from D’Amour’s familiar bass sound to a more alternative sound that is reminiscent of Smashing Pumpkins or the space themed, and later, music of Pink Floyd. As you could expect it sounds well produced.

Unfortunately my digital copy did not come with lyrics so I had to wing it when it comes to deciphering the albums messages. As you can imagine some of it is exceptionally deep but delivered in more of a radio friendly approach this time around. As I began to blend in with the music, I’ll be honest, I liked it but did not love it. There seems to be some sort of nagging repetitiveness about the album at its core that had me checking its run time to see if I had not been listening to the album for hours. The complete run time of the album is just shy of a full hour but, honestly, it felt longer. I listened to the album about four times in total and each time was a different experience. The first time around I just couldn’t shake the Tool bass sound that is present on the album’s more aggressive tracks. The second time around I found a new appreciation for all the subtle little beeps and bleeps popping up occasionally or the classic rock sound buried deep inside of the albums construct. By the third I found myself a bit bored with the album. It just wasn’t speaking to me anymore. As I write this up I listen to the album in the background for the fifth time and parts that I’ve missed come to light that give the album life again. Its a strange experience to listen to this album. I have a feeling at some point its all just going to come together and I’ll find that I do really think its great. For now I have run out of time for experimenting and will leave you with my thoughts on the album. Possibly worth checking out…just maybe give it some time to sink in before you either love it or hate it. Hope that helps. As always final judgment is yours. Enjoy.
