The Summer of Massacre holds the Guinness World Record for having the highest body count of any film at 155 and according to the official website, has 22 awards from various institutions. You’d think, then, that the film would tolerable at least. Oh how wrong you would be…

There have been plenty of horrible movies I’ve seen over the years but none come close to the horror that is The Summer of Massacre. And I don’t mean horror in a good way. The film is split into five separate slasher stories that focus more on random killing than any sensible plot or characters.

In the first one, a guy goes out for a late night jog gets brutally attacked by a group of thugs. Rather than go to the hospital or call the police, he goes on a random killing spree, killing anyone he comes in contact with. There’s no reason given for his killings whatsoever. It’s like the people behind the film just wanted to see how many deaths they could fit into 98 minutes. The other stories tend to follow the same logic. There’s a girl with spinal bifida who goes on a killing spree, a murderous rapist who’s been looking for his bastard son so he can kill him, a teen Christian group camping in the woods of some horror legend, and a bunch of serial killers who are let loose on the town. Mass killings are the only thing these stories have in common. That, and horrible visual effects.

All these killings wouldn’t be so bad if they actually looked cool. Unfortunately, the effects are downright horrid. Awful computer graphics plague every death and completely take the audience out of any experience the film might have brought on. Just watch the official trailer and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Even simple things like blood splatter are reduced to cheesy CGI effects. By the end of the first story, watching any more becomes almost unbearable. There is nothing good about this film. The Summer of Massacre massacres the horror genre and film industry itself.
