Craig is 16 years old and depressed. Unlike most kids though, he decides to check himself into a psychiatric hospital in hope for a quick fix. When he realizes that the people are not sound in the head he wants out but by then it's too late.

It's Kind of a Funny Story isn't funny at all really and can be quite depressing at times. The hospital holds all types of people and many of them aren't pretty. Muqtada, Craig's new roommate, never leaves his bed. Solomon had a massive acid trip and has never been the same since. Then there's Bobby (Zach Galifianakis) who appears quite normal and seems to run the place but like all of us, he has his secrets as well.

Keir Gilchrist reminds me of a young Justin Long. He's a little bit goofy and many times you can't help but laugh at his unfortunate situation. While at the hospital, young Craig meets Noelle (Emma Roberts) and they instantly have a connection, probably because she's the only other 16 year old in the place. Gilchrist and Roberts are instantly a likable couple and you can't help but get a warm feeling in your heart when things go well for them. I think they're characters we can all connect to, despite their young age.

Zach Galifianakis puts on a surprising performance that is quite dramatic yet still retains some humor on the outside. He puts on this charade as if everything's okay but as the audience, you know that something's up. This is probably one of the most serious roles I've seen Galifianakis in and he hits the nail on the head with it.

It's Kind of a Funny Story might seem like a downer at first but somewhere towards the middle you become enthralled with the story and won't want to look away. It's not all depressing as there still is a little bit of subtle humor and by the end of the film things are looking pretty good. Everyone puts on a remarkable performance and gets out of their usual comfort zone. I went in with a blank mind not knowing what to expect and came out with a smile.
