Show: Man in a Suitcase Season/Volume: 2 Genre: Action/Adventure, Drama Starring: Richard Bradford Studio: Acorn Media Runtime: 780 minutes Release Date: January 15, 2012 Format: DVD Discs: 4 Rating: () Grade: B- Man In A Suitcase was a British show that aired on ABC for one season in 1967. This four-disc set covers the second half of the 30-episode season with the remaining 15 episodes. The series starred Richard Bradford in the lead role, as a former CIA-turned-man for hire. He traveled the world taking on dangerous jobs and basically being a freelance spy for whoever could pay his price. Stylistically, the show is similar to The Avengers (the British spy series, not the superheroes) or The Man from U.N.C.L.E. More recently, it has a similar aesthetic to what was being parodied in the first Austin Powers movie. There’s at least one dance scene here that’s totally mod and pretty hilarious (if unintentionally so). Additionally, the first episode features some pretty dated attitudes and dialogue about Africans/blacks. It takes place on an African plantation where a number of the natives work as servants for the white British owners. The owners definitely aren’t presented in a positive light, but even with that caveat, it can still be pretty jarring to hear how they talk about their servers. At any rate, while the show is obviously dated, it’s still fairly enjoyable. If you’re a fan of retro spy dramas, then this man of international intrigue is just what the doctor ordered. |
