Show: Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files Episode(s): UFO Crash Landing/Graveyard Ghost Genre: Reality, Sci-Fi/Fantasy Starring: Jael De Pardo, Ben Hansen, Bill Murphy, Austin Porter, Lanisha Cole, Devin Marble Network: SyFy Airdate/Time: October 19, 2011 10:00pm Rating: () Grade: B+ Fact or Faked returns to Syfy with its season two second half featuring Jael, Ben, Bill, Austin, Devin, and new team member Lanisha. To kick off the season two return the team head to White Sands, New Mexico to uncover weather or not a documented crash was either UFO or something more logical. Then the team moves on to Nevada to visit the Tonopah Cemetery, the location of a massive incident that took the lives of several miners, and is said to be haunted by the spirit of that particular events hero, Big Bill Murphy (Oddly enough one of the crew members is named Bill Murphy). Video evidence in both cases leaves a lot of room for speculation, but in the end the teams investigation may or may not prove weather these events are fact or faked. Of all the shows that I’m forced to watch at home this one is probably my second favorite, Destination Truth being the first. The niche for this particular show is that the Fact or Faked team uses science to recreate events that they find to try and debunk them. They build props, they have a stunt man for more hands on experiments, and each member of the crew brings their own specialties that pertain to fields which could aid in said experiments. You get to see some fabulous footage of paranormal, cryptozoological, and extraterrestrial events the team scavenges for and presents for that weeks case, and you get to see them attempt to debunk them. Sometimes your rewarded with some sporadic event that pops up during their investigations that adds more weight to the legitimacy of said events. Of course Fact or Faked is a pretty accurate description, not just for the show title, but as a rule for those watching. I for one find myself skeptical about the outcomes on the show or even the sincerity of the show and its crew at times. In this episode I couldn’t shake the fact that most of the conversations between crew members seemed a bit over rehearsed. In one particular instance, when the crew head to an isolated location to perform experiments, Ben says their going to use some equipment to help them recreate their event, and, that they have all of the components to do so inside of their truck. Jael looks at him and says, “Do we?” If you’ve been traveling for miles and miles inside the same truck as your equipment how would you not know that? Also, new crew member Lanisha Cole is slotted down as a photographer. According to her wiki page she was an actress and model for The Price Is Right, starred in some hip hop videos, and the film Soul Plane. The couple of reasons I point this out is that her IMDB page and her wiki page fail to recognize any sort of photography skills. Secondly this would be the second model the show has hired on. Jael was once an aspiring model and Actress before building up credibility as a producer and investigator for Current TV and as an investigator, translator, and producer on Destination Truth. Is this just a ploy for ratings with the male audience or will Lanisha prove to be an excellent addition to the crew? Time will tell. As for the investigations. I’ve been a bit perturbed by this show before. The Moon Landing Conspiracy, where people have argued the event was filmed professionally in order to pull the US ahead during the cold war, was obviously debunked on the show. The crews input in the end was that the trials were inconclusive when obviously they were not. If your going to be a show created to bring truth to certain events then have the guts to do it with conviction. As for this particular episode of the show. I thought they did a pretty decent job but was unhappy with the final results of the second investigation. Once again the crew attempts to try not to offend anyone by neither committing to the evidence they’d discovered while investigating and by over hyping other evidence that, to me, seemed to be nothing. In any case the show is back and it is the same as it ever was. Highly entertaining, a bit unnerving, but never boring. As always final judgment is yours. Enjoy. |
