Show: Sharktopus Genre: Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi/Fantasy Starring: Eric Roberts, Sara Malakul Lane Network: SyFy Channel Airdate/Time: September 25, 2010 9:00pm Rating: () Grade: D- A father/daughter team with a secret military contract are in the final stages of testing their genetically mutated creature when something goes wrong and the device they use to control its mind gets dislodged. Now they must track down their Sharktopus before not only their secret project gets out but people are killed. This leaves them with only one option: bringing in Andy Flynn. As lives hang in the balance Andy will have to work quickly to put a stop to Sharktopus which means putting his own life at risk. Let’s get some of the good points out of the way real fast. You get to see Sharktopus quickly in the movie, none of this glimpses of a tentacle here, fin there; it’s full on Sharktopus from the get go. And there are a few moments of god awful acting/lines that might beat you down to finally chuckling. That’s it. The effects are what you expect, horrible; but in that we don’t give a shit way so they aren’t even funny. The whole plot of “let’s control a genetically altered creature electronically because that has never goes wrong” is played out and tiresome. In fact let’s face it all these movies are starting to become just the same piece of crap over and over again. They are predictable, boring, and use the same stale jokes. Occasionally you may find one gem of a B movie in the lot but this one certainly isn’t it (and really when you release 100’s the odds are in your favor that 1 won’t completely suck). The filming jumps back and forth to subpar TV quality to indie college project. To flesh out an already weak story they fill it in with the same stock type footage of a motor on the back of the boat churning water, gears being shifted on the boat, or waves just so they can get it to the time they allotted it to play on the SyFy channel. About the only salvageable thing is having Sharktopus turn land-shark on you and hobbling around walking style on his tentacles. But here is where yet another bad mistake was made. They reveal this too early on so by the time the end comes you are just sick of having the entire screen filled with mediocre mix of Playschool looking shark attached to multiple legs. Sorry if this is coming across as just plain bashing but honestly I sick of really good movie titles like “Sharktopus” been taken and then attached to crap like this. If you have a great name make sure that the movie matches it in quality. Anyone can make a shit film, but it surprisingly takes skill to produce a quality B movie that will gain cult status.
