Show: The Closer Episode(s): The Big Bang Genre: Drama Starring: Kyra Sedgwick, J. K. Simmons, Corey Reynolds, Robert Gossett, G. W. Bailey, Tony Denison, Michael Paul Chan, Raymond Cruz, Jon Tenney, Phillip P. Keene Network: TNT Airdate/Time: July 12, 2010 9:00pm Rating: () Grade: A- I really can’t believe that The Closer has made it six seasons already. Not because it’s a bad show, quite the opposite actually. It’s such a great show and it’s been a fun ride thus far for the five seasons that it’s been on the air. To use the old cliché, time flies when you’re having fun. From the beginning, the element of humor (mixed with the darker side of crime solving) has been used to great effect in The Closer. The cast has such great chemistry and while there are a ton of cop dramas out there, their work together is what truly sells this one in particular for me. Don’t get me wrong: the show isn’t all laughs and giggles by any stretch. If anything, the humorous element is more on the gallows side of the scale. But combined with the crime mystery plots, it makes for a great mix and a compelling show. Which bring me back to this premiere: I’m incredibly stoked that round six is upon us. While it’s impossible to judge the upcoming season based on only one episode, it would seem that everything (and everyone) is back and firing on all cylinders. Without giving too much away, the season starts up with a high-rise murder, a move to a new building for the Major Crimes Division team, and a possible shake-up in LAPD leadership. Kyra Sedgwick’s Brenda Leigh Johnson is back to her crime solving ways and her team is back to keeping up with her and her convoluted ways of saving the day. Who knows where it’s ultimately going to lead, but I’m going to have a blast watching it for another season. |
